On Thursday 30 June, William Blue Dining hosted an official function to promote the launch of Skilld, an online job network that matches employees with employers (previously known as OneShift).

Skilld is an innovative technology that transforms the hiring process for businesses and jobseekers. It provides a network where businesses can instantly connect with skilled people who are actively looking for jobs.

NSW Minister for Skills and Small Business John Barilaro was joined by young entrepreneur and Skilld.com founder Gen George at the event, which also served to highlight the importance of trade based education and creating efficiencies for talent from training schools such as William Blue to get into jobs immediately following graduation. It was particularly apt then, that the event was catered and hosted by current William Blue students training for careers in commercial cookery.

It was the Minister’s first visit to William Blue Dining, and he was highly impressed with the whole operation and the real world opportunity it gave to students.

William Blue student, Zoe O’Brien, said that she was studying Commercial Cookery because hospitality is such an exciting industry to start a career in, with many avenues and endless job opportunities.

“I have 6 months left in my course so I’m certainly thinking ahead about looking for a job. It is important to match the right skills with the right workplace and a network like Skilld provides a great opportunity for newly trained chefs like myself to find suitable employment. For people who are young and new to the industry, it will also help connect them with employers as they learn who is who in the industry.”

Jerome Casteigt, General Manager (Hospitality) Laureate Australia & New Zealand, said:

“Hospitality is now one of the world’s fastest growing industries, and education providers such as William Blue continue to challenge traditional stereotypes of what a career in hospitality looks like, with the majority of graduates either progressing rapidly up the ranks of major hotel and resort chains and international event companies, or even starting their own successful businesses such as restaurants.

“At William Blue, hands-on experience is worked into every course so students have the skills ready to enter the workforce before they graduate. All courses also include significant industry immersion with some of the most prestigious hospitality, tourism and events brands in Australia and the world. This combination of applied learning, industry experience, plus academic study is ensuring that our students are work ready on graduation.

“While William Blue students are regularly sought out by for jobs immediately following graduation, it’s important that they are connecting with the right employers – those who will really invest in their career progression. A platform like Skilld is an incredible asset for graduates of hospitality management degrees seeking a career in the industry. It was fantastic to host an event for such a positive new initiative. Thank you to everyone who was involved in the coordination and execution of what was undoubtedly a hugely successful launch.”
