William Blue College of Hospitality Management graduates Adelene Stahnke and Catalina Fuentes have won the NSW Sydney Metro Nestle Golden Chef Hat Awards and are now headed to Melbourne to compete for the national title in September.
The Nestlé Golden Chefs Hat Award is the longest running culinary competition in Australia and offers young chefs and apprentices the chance to showcase their skills and broaden their culinary horizons.
At just 22 years of age, Adelene, a William Blue scholarship student who graduated in 2014, already works as a Sous Chef and helps to run two restaurants owned by her partner, including the popular ‘Bang’ and the recently opened ‘Trunk Road’, both in Surry Hills.
Catalina and Adelene became best friends while studying Commercial Cookery together at William Blue and Catalina now works at Papi Chulo in Manly. Their passion for cooking inspired them to enter the competition together in the first place, Adalene said.
“I like to keep myself motivated and challenged by participating in chef competitions. It gives me something to look forward to and train towards. This year’s win means so much to me because I’m entering it with my best friend and we beat over 22 teams,” Adelene said.
“This is my first cooking competition, so I was pretty nervous at the start. But cooking next to my best friend Adelene helped me relax and enjoy the competition. At the end all the practice and pressure was well worth it!” Catalina added.
The competition, which began in 1965, offers apprentices and junior chefs the opportunity to pit themselves against their peers and benchmark their cooking skills. It also provides young chefs with the opportunity of being mentored by culinary instructors and gives them access to a national network of professional chefs.
This year, the national winning team will be headed to North America for a once in a lifetime Food Safari, including work experience with a multi award-winning chef at a world-renowned establishment. For more information about the awards, visit http://www.nestle.com.au/
